Ia there some way to find out how much memory is left without having connect to a computer?

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Might want to mention which iOS you are using - but on my iPad2 w/ iOS5, I enter the 'Settings' menu, then press 'General' - both the 'About' & the 'Usage' selections in the right panel will provide the information desired - let us know if this answers your question -
