Basically you attach that with your habitat, then every time you gave food, rub, clean or play with the monster, it gave you some XP. It cost 10 coins for every use, though. So for a squonk, you spend 10 coins every 1 hour (one cycle for the squonk)...
Hopefully that clear enough...

They are unlocked when you get the full set of each type, common, rare, legendary etc
