Still looking for active friends. And this was never answered, but I figured it out.
When you get a gift, you can either click "take" or click on their picture. If you click on their picture, it takes you to the "thank" icon.
I saw this asked a lot and never answered, it's a small difference and hopefully we can all thank now.
Either way, I'm a lower rank (16) but I play daily, help with game info when I can, check my good friends wish lists, and use all of my strength as soon as it refills.
