I Concur With Cmfox...
Having a 3G iPad is very convenient--not only do I use it for its GPS capability, but it helps me keep connected when wifi is not available. I only subscribe to the 250mg monthly charge of US$14.95. I use an app called download meter that helps me budget my daily 3G usage so I never go over that self induced restriction.
Regarding AT&T coverage, I don't have problems getting service in and about northern Indiana, southern Michigan, and NW Ohio. But where you are located may be a different story.
You may not need 3G if you are just using your iPad at home or at school--assuming you can get on the wifi services at either place. That is what I had thought at first--but since owning this iPad, I find I'm using it every where I go.
