I set up my Gmail account on my iPad, but only enabled Calendars. For my Google mails I use another app.
My Android phone (SGS3) has my Gmail account for Play Store, and it is also one of my accounts in Settings - Accounts. I use more than one Google calendar, so I enabled the ones I wanted to sync to my iPad in Google (twerppoet showed you the link, I suppose). Also, my default calendar account on my iPad is one of the Google calendars. In my Android/Google calendar, all the Gmail calendars I use are enabled (Settings in the app).
I don't remember all the steps exactly that I had to take, so I can't tell them one by one. That's just the general direction.
