New Ipad user Question

Hi Everyone,

I have the ipad 3g 64gb. I have no data plan, no simcard for use. I only use it with wifi at home for now.

Is there any app that will give me driving directions (not navigation or turn by turn) but simply a mapquest or google driving directions app that just simply spells out the directions as if you were on your PC and wanting to print it out. Thank You for any advice and help. I'm sure the app would have to be pretty big in size but that is ok.

AroundMe? It's actually an iPhone/iPod Touch app but it works fine with the iPad. It gives you a map. There's actually a lot of mapping and driving direction apps. Even using just the browser and Google Maps w/ directions would work. Just save it or send it to Read It Later (the greatest app ever) for offline use.

The iPad's native 'Map' app has some functionality here. If you go into 'Maps', hit 'Directions' and then type in the zip code of your destination it provides you a blue bar at the bottom of the screen where you can choose driving, public transport or walking. Choose the option you want and hit the 'list' icon and a list appears that spells out the route for you from your current GPS location or from a 'dropped pin'

I'm in the UK, so the Maps app might be different here. It works fine on the move too.

Works fine in the US too. I use it all the time. You will get a route on the map plus turn by turn if you wish in text. If I'm goiing to be offline and think I'll need it I set it at the zoom I need to see the route and do a print screen which I can bring up later for reference (from thr photo app). I may even do a couple in tricky areas. I usually do this instead of using my GPS which I find both distracting and annoying LOL.

You mentioned Mapquest yourself. Why not just go with that?

REQUIREMENTS: Compatible with iPhone® and iPod touch® Requires iOS 3.0 or later. Please Note: GPS features require an iPhone with GPS functionality. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease
battery life.

I dont use the data part. No sim card. Just WiFi at home

I thought I had replied in another thread about the same question. I am in the US and use Maps for this all the time. You must be hooked to the net by wifi or at leaet 3G if using a tethered phone (I found). I simply put in my beginning address, the ending address, choose search, give it a bit and then choose start with "driving". You will get a map which you can zoom into and move around in and also choose text turn by turn driving directons. If I want to reference it later I do a printscreen which I can view in Photos offline.

Thanks

Hi Diane,

Yes I have received your answer in a different post.

However, what if I dont start with a wifi and dont have 3g.

just an ipad thats it no service on data service at all

There are a few GPS apps that have their own maps. CoPilot is the only one that comes to mind for the iPad. Tom Tom has an iPHone app you could use in a pinch, as does Garmin.

I can't remember who the other big GPS navigation company is, but they would be worth searching for.

But, the apps that supply their own maps, and therefor don't need an internet connection, are a lot more expensive. CoPilot, the most affordable that I know of, is $29.99.
