Today in 1900 - a prize of 100,00 francs was offered for communicating with extraterrestrials. Martians were reportedly excluded- because Earth's nearness to Mars made it too easy. ;)

December 17, 1903; at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville, become the first to successfully fly a self propelled heavier- than- air aircraft. The craft is currently on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.

I have seen a replica of the Wright plane flying. Calm evening conditions were essential for a safe trip.

Here's a photo of a replica that flew on the centennial of the original flight. It's located in the Science and Industry Museum in Chicago.

On this day in 1946 - Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life," premieres and since then I have watched it 43 times.
