The Apollo 8 mission departs for the moon. They entered lunar orbit on Christmas Eve, becoming the first people to see the backside of the moon directly, as well as being the first to celebrate Christmas in lunar orbit.

December 23, 1986; Dick Rutan and Jeanna Yeager complete the first non- stop flight around the world without refueling. Their aircraft was the Voyager. The flight departed from Edwards Air Force base on December 14th. The flight lasted 9 days, 3 minutes and 44 seconds. Their flight ended at Edwards.

December 1968: Apollo 8 mission orbits the moon. Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders broadcast first pictures from the moon.
 
Today, in I believe 440 AD, the Catholic Church agreed upon a date and set today as the birth of Christ. Before this it was believed to have been into the new year or somewhere towards the end of spring
 
In the mid 1600's Isaac Newton (is that who they named Apple's PDA after ;) ) was born on Christmas day. I heard this in every one of my Calculus classes, Physics, Statics and Dynamics and Thermodynamics.
 
I just watched Braveheart, I believe William Wallace was captured by the British today. I really don't know what year - can someone confirm this?

William Wallace was captured by the English on August 5, 1305, in Robroyston, near Glasgow.
