What's new

On this day in history.

July 30, 1966; England wins the first televised World Cup, beating Germany 4-2 in overtime at Wembley Stadium. England won the Jules Rimet Trophy for the first time in the World Cup's 36 year history.

Yes. Those in-dash gasoline heaters that I always thought would incinerate me on some cold January morning. :O

My cooling ( rod or coil ) I don't know the correct terminology for cars. Anyway that thing broke down and I put in a new one but that didn't work. Then asked a male friend to come out to help. When he was done the car wouldn't even start. So he took the biggest diesel tractor on our farm and decided he could get my car going by pulling it down our 1/4 mile road. This is what happened! He tried to turn the tractor around at the end of the road. He took the turn too wide and ended upside down in the ditch!, all of the hydraulic fluids were draining into the ditch! The tractor was right upside down in the ditch and my car didn't even start after that!
Amazingly enough I didn't get in trouble from my dad or brothers for wrecking their tractor! But I was told I would probably do better taking my bug to the mechanic! Well, I got it going again and spent all summer getting my left foot burned if I took a trip longer than 15 minutes. I will NEVER forget that feeling! Thanks for reminding me AA!!
Good times they were! :-)

Oh how I miss those old beetles! The new ones are nice but the old one's will always be my favorites!

I'm with you there squib for sure. It was my first new car I bought and I loved it. I loved its quality, reliability and the sound of that air-cooled engine, closest description being like shaking a bucket of bolts:) And the faster it went the quieter it got leaving the noise of the rear engine behind. You had to be careful though going around corners with that rear engine weight. Some of my mates found out why they called them beetles; too fast around corners and it was soon on its back with its legs in the air. And no need to worry about baby seats. The baby soon got used to the sound and warmth in that nice cavity between the back seat and the engine wall;)

When I was young, my father had one, too. My sister always was hiding in that space behind the backseats. :-)
In winter, we never had problems to get stuck in snow. While other cars were struggling, my beetle always found it's way out! Once, I even pulled a Nissan Prairie 15 km from where it got stuck to my village.
