I never knew that. I thought Brunel's "Great Britain" was the first.

EDIT. My maritime history knowledge is poor! The Great Britain's maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York was in 1845. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Great_Britain#Transatlantic_service

During my search, I came across a sail assisted paddle wheeler, Savannah, which made an early crossing.
