Overnight Charge Crash

The situation;
- iPad 16GB Wifi, ~50% charge at 11pm. OS is 4.2.1, non JB
- Put on charge overnight
- Next morning screen shows small Apple logo with 'gear' next to it, overlapping
- On/off won't work
- Plug into PC/charge does nothing
- Eventually holding home button & power clears screen
- Doing same again restarts, Apple logo shows for a long time
- iPad eventually starts, all ok.

Any thoughts of whether this an indication of hardware problems? Or just a software glitch?

If it doesn't happen to often, then it's probably just a software glitch. I usually do a reset after downloading any large apps,multiple apps, or several updates, this usually prevents this from happening.
