Photos not showing in photo app

I have 50 photos on my iPad but for some reason they do not show up in the photo app that comes with the iPad. At first I thought it was iTunes not syncing they way I want, which by the way is a common occurrence, but after some fiddling around I discovered that it wasn't a syncing issue. I know the photos are on the iPad because I can see them when I touch the photo icon on the bottom right corner of the screen when the iPad is locked.

Does anyone know why they don't show up in the Photo app anymore?

Have you checked on the different tabs on top of the Photos-app?

When I started the app the screen was blank and no tabs were showing.
I ended up updating the OS and doing a system restore and it started working again.
