Problem with directv app

Does the Directv receiver have to be connected to the Internet in order for the app to work? The receiver I'm trying to use with the app cannot be validated on my iPad, so I wanted to know if I have to somehow connect the receiver to a router.

You will have to get the Internet connection kit for one of your DirectTv receivers. Once connected the DirectTv app connects and will validate.

I called DirectTV to get the whole house DVR set-up and had them install the Internet connection Kit at that point. At one point in time DirectTV allowed big box stores like Best Buy to sell receivers and DVRs but have since stopped. So my guess would be to call DirectTV, they are the probably the only suppliers...
