Problems with email and IPad Air ... Any assistance appreciated

In Italy (home is Australia). Receiving emails no problems but unable to send unless going back and logging on to Telstra BigPond and Web mail. Have checked settings both show my incoming and outgoing as mail.bigpond.com.
Any suggestions as to what might be the problem. Have even tried using my android phone as hotspot but that didn't work either. thanks in advance.
