When I use conventional google maps, I can get the detailed latitude and longitude for a Point on the map. When I use the iPad map application, I can't find a way to see this. I would especially like a way to say "where am I?" and have it answer in a complete way "123 some street, some city, state, zip at 12.34 N, 56.78 W."

Thoughts about ways to accomplish this?

There are several free apps, such as GPS Tracker, that will give you latitude and longitude. But I know of no way that the iPad's native Maps app can be 'persuaded' to give you this information - or anything else about the GPS satellites, configuration, satellites in view... etc

That seems a mite convoluted. GPS tracker is designed to trace where some other device is (like my child's cell phone.). I was looking for an easy way to find out the coordinates of where I am. In any case, thanks for the help Tim.

"WhereamIat?"

I just discovered a little app called "WhereamIat?" in the App Store. Free and gives your current latitude and longitude out to eight decimals and places you on a Google map. Looks like what you need?

Use goggle earth

I came here for similar reasons, although I wanted to know the lat-long of somewhere where I wasn't. After playing around with apps it occurred to me that I already had google earth installed. It looked up the given address just fine and it displays the lat-long in the title bar at all times.

Google Earth for iPad displays the lat-lon for the center of the screen. Desktop GE shows it for the location under the mouse cursor.
