My smart cover is red leather. At first I worried about it getting dirty or scuffed, but then I thought, "Relax, enjoy! If I can't cope, I'll put a black one on my Christmas list." Also, somewhere in this forum, a sensible person mentioned appreciating the antique look, which has made me less likely to freak over the occasional mark It's only like having any other leather accessory like a handbag/purse! (Having said that, I usually go for black!)
