The Telegraph reports that Starbucks has today updated its UK iOS app, which works on both iPhone and iPad, with the ability to pay for drinks or other items in Starbucks by scanning a barcode on your iPhone or iPad at the till. In order to use the service you have to first have a Starbucks loyalty card. You can then download the app and use it to synchronize your Starbucks card account and balance information, according to The Telegraph. Very handily, you can also load money onto your Starbucks card via the app. The service goes live from today at 600 Starbucks stores in the UK. Since a similar service went live in the US back in January 2011, Starbucks has recorded 26 million mobile transactions, with $110 million being loaded directly onto Starbucks cards via the app.
“Customers are looking for extra value. This scheme allows us to be more personal, rewarding the most frequent customers with extra benefits. We also know that fewer customers want to use cash, so putting My Starbucks Reward on mobiles offers a faster, easier way to pay,†Ian Cranna, vice-president of Marketing for Starbucks told The Telegraph.
