What's new

The "Anything Goes" thread

You're right, lady. They really love him, it was obvious, and were very excited to take him home. The woman already posed a comment on the humane society's Facebook post about him going home, saying he was on his dog bed chewing on rawhide. I welled up again. I'm so happy for him, my heart is very full. I would like to think the love and time spent with him every Saturday did contribute to his happiness while he was here and his disposition. It just really hurts sometimes being dog-less. Especially when I wanted that particular dog so much. I have been walking dogs there since June and I have liked them all, but really adored maybe a half dozen of them. He topped my list.

Rich - my cat is just naturally very skittish. She's afraid of any human being that isn't me or my dad. I'd just be worried she'd be stressed out, and the dog would get in the way of our relationship and bond. I don't know how I could test a dog out without bringing my cat to the shelter. Any suggestions?

I wish I knew someone with a dog and could have them bring them over or something... but sadly I do not.

Understood. Are you able to bring a potential pet home? Our shelters here allow that (you have to give them a deposit or something). That way you could see how your cat reacts.

We had a situation where we had a single dog, runt of the litter, quite shy and scared of just about everything. We ended up getting another dog...a braver one and he immediately became the alpha. The timid dog came out of her shell within weeks and is now very "brave". She's not as fearless as he is, but much, much better. We had another situation where we had two dogs, about the same age, got them at the same time and one passed away. The other was heartbroken and became quite introverted. Eventually we got another dog and she came right back to life.

It may not be that your cat will "welcome" a newcomer right away, but it might give her the breathing room she needs to not be so afraid anymore...putting the responsibility of the well-being of the home on someone else's shoulders...that being the dog.

Each time we've introduced new pets we keep part of the house "exclusive" to the current resident(s). They can always retreat upstairs or to a room, somewhere where the other animal(s) can't reach them, where they are safe. Eventually everyone gets free reign of the house (except for where the cats are fed, etc.), but the cats know where the dogs can't go. :)

It's really hard to say what would happen until you try.

That does make sense Rich. Yes, it is a good idea trying out a cat friendly dog home. It's the only way to find out. Unfortunately Bonnie(collie cross springer) doesn't like cats and it's been hard reintroducing her into the home. She was in the outer corridor and we had to shut the door to prevent the cats being chased. She's alright if they just sit there and don't react but our rat catcher Trixie, can be silly and runs. Perfect for Bonnies rat catching instincts. Samson, our toothless wonder cat doesn't get bothered by Bonnie. Also when someone comes to the door, Star(mypom) barks and Bonnie instantly sets everyone going. Patience is whats needed now. I don't want her to be alone in the corridor now Sam has died.

Yep...all makes sense. Been there done that! :)

Hee Hee. Yeah that one! We had friends over tonight and we were reminiscing about when we got married and we left our first collie with them. They've just told us that they came home to find a corner of one of their dinner mats on the floor and no sign of anything else. He was a bugger with chewing. He ripped up my brother in laws car once because he was anxious about being left on his own. Luckily, it was an old car.

Rich and Hayley, thanks for your comments. Right now I can't do it regardless - I have no job and am living tightly off of a loan until I get a teaching job next year. I also would need a bigger apartment I think. Hopefully a 2 bedroom. Unfortunately, a lot of the "cat friendly" dogs are the bigger breeds, it seems - terriers and cats don't seem to mix. Do they? I know dogs can break the stereotype though of course. I hope around this time next year I'm in a position to try this out.

And yes, Rich, considering I am a volunteer with EBHS, they would let me try a dog out. I did an event with the dog I mentioned above, the one I loved who got adopted today, last weekend. The volunteer coordinator told me I could actually take him for the night if I wanted to because the shelter wasn't open by the time I got back. My apt doesn't allow dogs so I couldn't do that, but yeah- at this shelter if you prove yourself responsible they let you do stuff like that. Which is nice.

My recall (not the lost chord!)

In the '60s there was the tale of a pub in Dorset with a special chair by an open window. The window opened onto a field with a cow in it.

A bald man sat in the chair. The cow looked in and licked his head. Guess what, after a few days his hair started to grow back. The story spread quickly. I believe the pub did brisk business with bald men coming many a mile to benefit from this miracle cure. I believe the beer was good too! 

Fact or fiction?

Xmas Puds? Mince Pies? Guy Fawks Night?

I'm thinkin I am out of the loop!

Mr. Fawks was a terrorist or so they say. A movie was made.

Mince pies are lovely and by Xmas Puds, I think he/she means Christmas Puddings. Also delightful. Do not forget the rum sauce.

So is the Christmas Goose. (and no, I do not mean the traditional pinching of a lovely derriere) First, you must kill a goose. Then strip it of its feathers and pull out the innards. Be sure to check the bird for errant buckshot. Failure to do that, and, well, when you are chased over the river and through the projects by angry gang members and finally, through the woods to grandmothers house you go, she can damage a denture if she bites some buckshot.

Anyway, you brine the bird and cook it. Ideally, you smoke it. Yummy. Especially nice with Xmas Puds and Mince Pies. You need pumpkin pie or sweet potato pie, a relish tray, yams, chestnut stuffing, a plate of shellfish like oysters, some really fine strong drink, some alcoholics, and a willing female when it comes time for the traditional Christmas goose.

Absolutely true. I was there and my head was actually licked by that very same cow. I have proof on 8 millimeter film.

To change the topic, as we can here.... Food for thought that button on your phone, the one under the 9, yes...the hash key....well it's actually called an octothorpe!
So if you would like to leave a message please press octothorpe!

Changing the topic again... My university stinks in that I've been waiting three weeks longer than most in my program (2 others are in my boat) to get student teaching placements for this semester. So I took matters into my own hands and secured my spring student teaching placement on my own. My former high school teacher emailed me this morning and said definitely yes to next semester. I am so stoked- he's one of my favorite teachers ever!! I'll be a little intimidated having him watching me.. But I also know I'm going to learn from the best!
