I know of them and have seen pictures of them,
but have never used one. Magnetic tape was the
commercial standard when I started working in the 70s.

What I do remember about wire recorders is their use in the early days of the space program
to record telemetry from satellites and test rockets.

One thing that they've discovered about wire recordings is that they hold up much better over time than old magnetic recordings. Mine came with some 60 year old recordings that played perfectly. Try that with 60 year old magnetic tape. The big downfall of wire recording was that it was incapable of stereo recording and payback. You can't record two tracks on the hair thin wire.

Since electronic editing was not possible in that era, cutting and splicing wire must have made for interesting playback. Not an ideal format for music although sound reproduction was as good as
a phonograph.

You actually had to tie a knot in the wire! See my photos on the post your old technology thread.

Mine first recorder was a Grundig TK5 reel to reel. Fabulous sound but I don't remember if it was stereo or not.

They were the leading tape recorder manufacturer in the late 50s

You sure do like Hockey. I have seen about a half-dozen+ posts about that game.

I've got a season ticket, right behind the home team bench. During football season you'll also see me posting from those games, as well.

My old t.v displaying Hendrix for the first time since the 70s

Its a good old TV :)

Is the TV picture really that bad or is it the photo you took making it look bad?
