upgrade with different iOS

My wife wants me to transfer her iPad 2 data to a new iPad air. I will do this for her using iTunes. I know the steps but I was wondering will it be a problem if the old iPad is running a version of iOS6? I suppose I could update the iPad 2 to iOS7 first but I would rather keep the iPad 2 using iOS6.

There shouldn't be a problem. You can't use a iOS 7x backup to restore on an iOS 6x device, but it should work the other way round.
