video replay in vertical viewing mode

I was videoing a basketball game and paused the recording at half time then hit the record button for the second half. When the I pad was hooked to a tv for replay the second half of the game was playing vertically or 90 degrees off. It was showing in the landscape mode on the I pad screen but the tv was off. The I pad was in the horizontal position with the home button on the right during recording.

What did I do wrong and how do I stop it from happening again?

We have done this two other times and it worked fine so this is the first time

Yeah uhm just google it ... It would be easier

When recording a video, hold the ipad so the home button is pointing to the right in landscape mode. That should make the recordings upright.
