Volume controls awful

I have an iPad 7th Generation and I am hoping there is a better way to control volume than the two buttons on the side. Is there someplace in settings that does a better job?
The two buttons are difficult to get to do anything, requiring a lot of pressure to cause any change.
But, beyond that, they do not simply control louder or softer volume. Sometimes the one on the right increases the volume and sometimes decreases. Same for the left.
Is this just my device or are all like that?

Swipe down from the upper-right corner of your screen to drop down the Control Center, which includes a volume slider. You can customize the Control Center in Settings.
