Warranty question

This is my first iPad and my first warranty from Apple I got the extended AppleCare plus warranty for $99 dollars. From Apple and they send me something to my email that looks like a repair slip. So I go to the Apple Store in the guy tells me they send them out as repair slips. Because it takes 72 hours for the geeks to process it I thought when you bye a warranty it's instinct. Can anyone please tell me is this how Apple does there warranty plans? I hope this makes sense. Thank you for any help on this
 
This is what I got by email. Well, the first part anyway.

I bought it at Verizon at the same time as the iPad; but that should not make any difference.
