Why is iPad 3 behind in specs?

Awesome points guys.

PS3: At the end of the day, Xbox is still overclocked to where is pretty much on its last leg. They had a good run on it and its about time for something new. I did hear that the graphics engine on the PS3 is pretty old. I may have misunderstood but i was told my a tech that they have issues learning the PS3 cores so switching platforms would be more pain than worth. I am not loyal to xbox because everyone i know that has one complains about it over heating and hardware issues. Maybe xbox fixed this, idk. My PS3 is still running strong with out heating issues and that is what matter. If xbox comes out with a better platform, i have no issues switching over.

iPad: At the end of my day, iPad does my needs. I have gathered enough that the retina on the new ipad will only show its potential with apps that are rendered to such resolution and same for photos on the internet. I do not see the point in developers creating games for just ipad 3 because i would piss a lot of ipad 1 and 2 users off. Any games even out that use the resolution of the ipad 3?

I am a realistic gamer when I do play games. Gran Turismo will always be my fav for the fact it more realistic. Each car behaves like the real thing. The graphics to to the human eye, from a distance look almost as if it is not a game. I look at other "simulation" car games on Xbox and something about them looks to....fake. To each his own though. I am itching to now what the next consoles will provide.

In most cases I would rather dish on PC tower for gaming either way. wish the Mac mini had better graphics

Your experience is very limited it seems and relying on other is a poor substitute for real world knowledge on the subject. I suggest you either find better information or go learn it directly. Your current sources are so out of touch with reality or out of date with what is going on it isn't even funny.

The Xbox 360 fixed its "overheating" issue 3 years ago. I could write a white paper on why it occurred and how it was solved, but I have already done one long post here. BTW they corrected it with the Jasper version of the console if you want to go look up the history.

The XBox 360 is NOT on it last leg nor has it ever been "overclocked". Seriously, do you even understand that you can't overclock a console unless you hack it?

There are already dozens of games for the iPad that utilize the Retina display. All you have to do is go to the App store and look. Heck Apple already created a special section for them.

Gran Turismo 5 is not even close to realistic. It took them two years just to get basic crash physics and that isn't even 100% yet. And it can't even remotely model an off-camber decreasing radius turn with trail-braking properly. I know this because I spent 5 years racing Corvettes (2004 5th Gen and 2006 6th Gen). Only two games on consoles can do it presently. One is Race Pro and the other is Forza 4. I own both consoles (280+ games for the 360, 70+ games for the PS3) and during breaks in the season I would buy the latest games and do practice sessions to keep my skill set up since I had to drive with kids 15 to 20 years younger who had better reaction times than I do.

Interesting thread. For the main poster, I don't think you need to worry about the new iPad specs v android tablets. I could maybe understand people moaning if the iPad was slow and struggling to load games ect but it's fine. More than fine infact, it's great.

Xbox v ps3?

I own both and I only use one. That is the Xbox, yet again it doesn't matter about the hardware so much. The software and Xbox live on the Xbox are better. It runs better than the ps3 and seems to multitask better too. I remember when the ps3 came out and it didn't have in game chat or you couldnt leave the game quickly to go to the ps3 dashboard and then go back. It seemed so backwards as the Xbox had it already. And even now you can't party chat with friends and bringing up the playstation Menu to see friends seems a slower process than the Xbox. And the ps3 has more power so they say.

As for gran turismo. It's a good game but for some reason took them forever to release and when they did I'd been playing Forza 3 for a year and then Forza 4 came out.
Both Forza games are great and they look fantastic. I can't see how gran turismo is any better or benefits from being on the more powerful ps3. It also takes a load of space up on the hdd and took about an hour to update the bloody game.

The PS3 may never get party chat. The current PS3 dashboard requires, I think, around 75 megs of memory. Since they split the memory 256 MB for program and 256 MB for graphics, that means you only have roughly 180 MB of memory for game code. To add in in-game chat, would require at least another 20 megs if not more. Current developers are already complaining about the memory foot print limitation as it is. At one point I heard rumors that Sony was going to page out all but a few stubs and API calls to help free up memory. But I didn't stick around long enough to see if that finally happened in the SDK.

BTW, the PS3 is more powerful than the 360. No ifs, ands or buts about it. If it wasn't for the memory design killing the PS3 from day one, the current narrative of the console wars would be entirely different today.

Fair enough. But there is no point the ps3 boasting more power if it can't use it. As it stands the Xbox is better for me as it provides the best user experience. The only real use I find for my ps3 is that it's a great media player. Better than the Xbox.

No doubt about it that the PS3 is far and away the better media player. Heck the Xbox 360 can still choke (drop frames) on sustained 20 mbit or higher encoded HD content. To this day I don't know why MS hasn't fixed that issue 100%.

Skull, your info seems much more legit and I am glad you clarified this to me about the PS3 vs Xbox. I do know the PS3 is a more powerful console but I did not know why it was sluggish compared to Xbox. 3 years ago was about when I heard the heating issues and never went back to read its updates. My basic info was it was a more powerful console but also expensive to create games on. I was told it would cost the developer 2 times the cost considering they would have to create the game on 2 differ consoles with the Xbox being weaker in graphics. My info maybe manipulated and I appreciate your more detailed explanation.:)

I am new to iPad so I can't find the section for iPad 3 only.

On the topic, because iOS is basically OSX mobile, meaning that it works with all of it's code coded in a clean manner. Android, is an ugly Linux, GNU, Java hybrid.

On the topic of PS3 vs Xbox in power, I have a PS3. It seems that the XBox has double the RAM with the same clocking speed. In one my games, there was meant to have a YouTube uploading function, unfortunately it got scrapped due to the fact it would take hours to upload a short video.

I am new to anything apple therefor ive been loyal to PC. I am in audio engineering and use a DAW. My recent laptop crapped out on me so i am considering a Macbook vs HP Envy for my portable audio mixing needs. Its a though choice because the specs on the Envy pretty much spank the Macbook in speed and it also has more than enough for the maximum requirement to get professional audio mixing quality. I like the Envy better but i do not like Windows. Macbook at $1500 does not even reach half of what my max requirements need. My only issues with Apple is why they put such low RAM and harddrive speeds in a machine at $1200. I am not sure yet if it worth the extra $1000 to get a 13" MAcbook to reach my requirements. Apple does have the more stable OS but it the specs I really need. Specially the hard drive speeds and RAM. Idk if it better to deal with the chances of WIndows crapping out on me. I've had issues with windows doing random glitches while running my DAW but not many.

*Even the iMAC does not reach those requirements. Sure i could pay $1000 in upgrades but i do not believe i should have to spend that much to reach par with a $700 PC. as far as others making a investment in a computer for the long haul and typical computing needs...heck yeah get a APPLE....even an older Core Duo is more than enough.

*I choice the ipad for my basic computing needs ....not a $1200 *13" Macbook. I encourage anyone to buy a ipad over a laptop for basic computing needs.*

You are confusing price with value. In most cases, Apple computers are about equal in price with the PC equivalents. Specs are mostly a way of false advertising the ways vendors use them. I am always amazed how many people do not understand that clock speed does not equal processing speed. It is like saying that a 5.0L engine in a car will be faster than a 3.7L. If everything else is equal, yes. But if you take the 302 that was in my 1972 car and compare it with the 3.7 in the new Ford trucks, you will see over double the HP and torque in the 3.7L ecoboost engine. The cheaper units often use older, cheaper chips that are not equal. And if you try to compare the MacBook Airs with traditional laptops, they will always have less storage because it is SSD instead of HDD.

I just spent 15 minutes pricing out my current iMac 27" with the 3.4GHz Quad Core and 16GB of RAM that I bought last year. $1100 gets me a case, cpu, memory, blah blah blah to meet the specs I am running right now. No monitor however. Since the 27" apple monitor is $1000, that means to build the machine I have now would cost $2100 today. I paid $2260 a year ago for my machine.

Tell us again how iMacs are over priced when the same components a year later cost only $160 less?

Seriously do you even research what you type before you actually type it? *Hint THAT was sarcasm*

It is not until i purchase the new ipad that i find*out that though it is perfect for my needs,*its far behind in specs. This is typical of Apple to be under spec'ed considering the Macbook Pro is underwelming in every hardware dimention. I was not expecting it to be the same for ipad. At the end of the day i am happy with the ipad on the weight of cons vs pros. I was under the impression that Apple will see a fall in sales and rep for thier lack in specs in both Macs and ipads. With quality andriod tablets coming out with real quadcore graphics and much more RAM, apple will have to up the game. Apple needs to stop charging such high prices for such a low spec'ed machine. For $500 i saw much justice in my ipad purchase, same for itouch. As for MAC, its very underwelming if you look deep under the hood compared to quality PC's of same price.

what are the main future impressions of ipad 3? maybe better utilizing of the graphics engine because i see no real differ compared to the ipad 2 to make me jump my pants. my hopes to far up?

I love my iPad 3 and I happen to be a Linux fan. I go with what will get the job done. I'm a aspiring Dj and when it comes to media... For me media meaning music apple is the ****. I found it weird that the tone conveyed in some of these forum responses made it seem like asking question makes you a idiot. I will say this. Don't buy something until you research the hell out of it and you are then satisfied with the data you have absorbed. Enjoy your iPad it will treat you well if it's treated in the same fashion.

Far behind in what specs??????

Dual core 1Ghz CPU.
Quade Core GPU.
1 GB of RAM.
226 PPI screen.

The reason Android tablets need 1.5 Ghz dual cores or quad core CPUs is so than can KEEP UP WITH the iPad. Android apps are running in the Dalvik VM which adds overhead. Plus their Java apps tend to be bloated with so many permissions that run in background it requires serious speed just to mask the issue from the end user.

Yeah, if you think you got ripped off, please take the iPad back ASAP and get an Android tablet. I can't wait to hear how you are doing after six months with Android.

The day Android switches to native applications like iOS is the day I will reconsider using Android after the debacle that was the Xoom and the next two generation of tablets.

You forgot 0.3 mpix earth shattering front camera and 5 mpix (OMG) back camera.
Dual core 1Ghz CPU, Quad core GPU --> state of the "ark" (as Noah ark) technology since Tegra 3 was introduced last year.
I do have both iPad3, original Transformer and Transformer Prime and after 5 months with Prime and 1 year with original Transformer with docking station (keyboard) my "go to" device is Prime. My wife likes iPad, but she is not much of a computer user, so her not having acces to filing system on iPad is just a blessing. For me, I like to have control over device I had purchased.
