My iPad is connected to the home wifi and all works well. However sometimes it decides to connect to a nearby BT Openzone network and then the speed falls and it is reluctant to send emails etc. Can I stop this -perhaps lock the iPad to my home wifi network?

How about ignoring the other WiFi network?
(in the settings - WiFi, select the wrong wifi network (blue arrow or triangle at the right side) and tap on ignore)
