Always on VOIP?

Does it exist? A voip software, which does not get closed down by the iOS?

I have been reading about users, where Skype just gets shut down after a while, so I went ahead and tried to reproduce it.

Started Skype on iPad and on a laptop. When starting N.O.V.A. 2, skype went offline immediately
I am now running another test, where only medium intensive apps are used (iPF, Safari, iPod, Youtube, Flipboard etc.) and after 1h of use, skype is still online.
Even when using backgrounder does skype not stay connected, if larger apps are loaded.

The only way I would use voip regularly is, if it is as easy as cellphone calls, but if the voip software does not stay online, this is not the case.

Would FaceTime stay online, or does it suffer the same fate as other apps?

Try out Whistle phone for ipad. It supports background multitasking. Its a free app. Turns ur ipad into a phone. Plus your ipad will have its own phone number in ur native area code. Also allows free call forwarding to ur cellphone. So if someone calls ur whistle number n u dont pick up, its forwarded to ur cell phone n cell phone start ringing. If u dont pick up the cell phone, it goes to whistle answering machine service, i believe. So yes, it stays running in background unless u kill it in task manager.
Wrks perfect when my ipad wirelessly tethered to my cell phone. Wrks in my home with wireless high speed also but i noticed comcast has some kind of block in the router or system that wont let me make outgoing calls with my whistle phone app. I can still recieve calls no problem. I wrote whistle support about the issue n told me that its probaly some kind of software block n need to contact comcast about removing the outgoing block on voip calls. Havent done it yet though....been b.s.n on it...lol.
