AppleInsider reports today on a DigiTimes story that says that Apple is planning to give a huge boost to its iPad 2 shipments over the next quarter according to information received from Apple’s overseas supply chain. In fact, it seems that Apple is looking at increasing the shipments by as much as between 12 and 14 million for the third quarter of 2011. As AppleInsider notes, this would represent a big increase from the 7-9 million iPad 2s that Apple is expected to ship in the current quarter. DigiTimes goes on to say that Apple is aggressively placing orders for the iPad 2, and stocking up on inventories of various components needed for the assembly of the device, such as touchscreen panels, in order to prevent any shortages that might scupper its ambitious shipment plans. If Apple did manage to pull this off, it would more than triple the slightly disappointing figure of 4.69 million iPads sold in the March quarter. Clearly the demand is there though, and this time around Apple seems determined to ensure that demand does not outstrip supply.

The irony is they are buying up the parts the competition wants to use a well, causing them to have to lower their estimates. I read this morning the Amazon Android tablet slated for this fall has lowered their projected units made from 4 million to under 2 million due to lack of parts available because Apple bought them.
