What's new

Architecture - buildings that is

The Eden Teatro (theatre?) looks fantastic, like something out of Gotham City in Batman!

The Archangel

Absolutely. I was blown away by it. The building has been restored and converted into an apartment hotel and an events centre of sorts. The foyer was really busy with folks queuing for something or other and watching horse racing on TVs in booths while waiting.

I wish we had taken a guide book to Lisbon as I've since discovered many hidden gems which we missed. However, overall the policy of going unprepared and to explore and enjoy worked :)

A return visit is on the cards.

Some more of Lisbon.

One day we visited Belem. Here we found more than expected. We wanted to visit a late 15thC fortification tower. The Belem Tower. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belém_Tower

The weather was against our reaching it, so we settled to enjoy other attractions - The monastery church of the Jeronimos Order, a park dedicated to Portuguese explorers in the Discoveries monument and a great paved area with a world map charting where the colonists settled. I couldn't get a good photo of the paving, but the maps app picks up the feature pretty well. We enjoyed a tram trip both ways, passing through old neighbourhoods etc.

Even more great pictures, Richard. What is that large seaside monument?

It's the Discoveries Monument. The figures are of different Portuguese explorers headed by Henry the Navigator who is holding a model of his ship. The photos in the Wiki page show better weather conditions than those we endured. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Padrão_dos_Descobrimentos

In fact, the wind gusts caused the nearby suspension bridge to sing! The suspension bridge is of double deck construction and carries railway lines as well as the motorway. The bridge is reminiscent of SF's Golden Gate Bridge.

The wiki page is excellant, with the sculpted figures named. Also, the mappi mundi in the open paved area by the monument is described, with a photograph.

Those pictures are just great Richard. Informative and entertaining, taken by a traveller and not just a tourist. Any more? LOL

Ongoing construction of the new local grocery store. Construction is a little behind schedule, as they were supposed to move in last month.

Looks more than a little behind if they should already have been in it.

That's been going on a while now Sci.....when did it all start?

Yes, it does seem to have taken a long time. I remember when you showed us the demolition phase. Is it the weather? It has been a hard winter in most countries but I expect you guys are used to it?
