Architecture - buildings that is

Let's go international. These are Barcelona Pictures taken in 2005. The photos are of, in sequence, Off Las Ramblas, Montjuc
Catalonian Art Museum, Parc Guell under-croft, Mies Van Der Rohe Pavilion, Olympic Football stadium, Gaudi's architecture, Parc Guell
serpentine terrace seating, traditional square, the old quarter, Gaudi detail, inside Mis Van Der Rohe Pav. (2 views),

Now are there any pics of New Delhi?

Richard, .......
From the 'pol' houses of Ahmedabad, Gujarat to the 'havelis' of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, from the amazingly resolved, vernacular roofs capes of the 'backwaters' of Kerela to the 'Mohallas & chowks' of old Delhi......have seen all these places and spent a lot of time learning .......it's only natural to fall in love with such organic simplicity & beauty of built form.
But as you have noticed, I prefer to do it myself and look ahead. Yes we do need to learn from history, not just romanticise it. But for me it doesn't stop at learning......I like to apply, even if it's at the cost of making some mistakes.
For whatever it is worth, I see a lack of poetic justice in the fact that Le corbusier never did a building in Britain where Norman foster gets to do Gherkin.

Very fair comments. We cannot stagnate. I think Le Corbusier was busy in the Americas, India and mainland Europe and bypassed the UK. I admire his work, but have yet to visit any of his buildings. Of course, we had the likes of Lutyens and Mackintosh around in Corb's era.

I like the way older buildings can be adapted to modern use and thus survive. Tate Modern is a prime example where an electricity generating station was converted into a superb art gallery.

I am a bit of a traditionalist, conservationist but do appreciate good modern architecture. As a slight diversion, do you get to see the TV programmes "Grand Designs"? Some of the ideas embody a lot of good thinking.

Thank you for the names of these building types. They are fascinating to see, by Googling for images. Many designs remind me of Venice, and others appear to be of a typical Asian religious type. What a fabulous heritage.

The first pic is breathtaking! The 2nd pic almost looks like one from a movie I saw years ago in high school. It talked about a future world that was way beyond my capabilities of imagining at the time. Awesome!

What is Sherborne Castle? I've never seen a castle, other than Cinderella's castle in Disney and I know that's not a "real" castle. I'm truly in awe of everybody's pics! Thanks again.

I don't know about Sherborne castle but this is Leeds Castle which is just down the road from me and I have been many times. We have lots of castles in this area (Dover, Chilham, Hever, to name but a few) but Leeds is my favourite, I've been to banquets there, played golf in the grounds, etc.......it is truly a lovely place.

Put it this way, I've lived here 23 years and I didn't know how big the acreage of Sherborne Castle was until Monday. We entered at one village and 2 or 3 later arrived at Sherborne Dorset! Sherborne has a lot of private and privileged schools in the area! Say no more!

Here are some views in Kew Gardens, a world class botanical centre. Admission is pretty hefty now. As a boy, I paid 1 old penny at the turnstiles to get in. Entry is over £5 these days. :(

These photos are of St Pancras Station, now the Eurostar Terminal, and of the British Library next door. The BL is worth a visit with free exhibitions and a nice bookshop.

I took these at the Barbican yesterday. The area is like a small city within London. It is a post-war development, in the style of Le Corbusier.

The theatre is good.
More pics will follow tomorrow, to show the gardens in the sky at Barbican.

Have a good day all.

Nice photos Richard. Keep them coming! I don't go to the big smoke anymore so it's great to see your pics. Have you got any new Olympic stadium photos yet! I hear from one of my teachers that there is a viewing platform?
