I had an Ipad 1 and used the original Apple cover on it until I bought the 3 last March. I have been using the Targus cover, no screen protector. I recently bought the Logitech Ultrathin BT keyboard cover and love it. Have a cheap Ebay silicone clear back which I cut the ears off corner so magnets would work in the slot securely, and back covered too securely.

Personally I think Apple did a great job making sure you spend more money on their Apple accessories, because everyone feels that the iPad is just too fragile on it's own. It just doesn't make sense to have the thing unprotected, unless you want to keep purchasing a new one every year. It WILL get damaged, so I have a nice case (Carrington Case), AND a screen protector.
