Backup before going to new op

Itunes automatically attempts to backup my ipad or sync it before updating to the new operating system. I've tried it now on two computers and still can't backup. On the first I left it go all night and by morning it still hadn't backed up. On the second computer it went about 2 hours and gave me a message that it couldn't write to my computer. I wonder if it is a space problem on the second computer. any thoughts?

Open iTunes, cancel the upgrade and sync normally. When complete, don't close iTunes, but just "Check for Update" and run the update.

Just a thought.
