Best Remote Desktop App

RE: Home vs. Pro editions of Windows.
Business Editions (ie PRO, Business, or Ultimate) of Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 all ship with a remote desktop server that uses the Remote Desktop Protocol. If you have iPad software that supports "RDP" it will work with your version of Windows on your home network.

If you do not have one of those versions of Windows there are free server programs that you can install on your PC that support the Virtual Network Computer (VNC) protocol. There is also a VNC server available for Macs.

Jump Desktop supports both RDP and VNC connections with the same program on the iPad.

If you want to connect to your computer at your office the simplest solution is to use the built in Virtual Private Network (VPN) system that is part of the iPad Settings app. It supports both the Microsoft VPN (PPTP) as well as L2TP and Cisco. After you make a VPN connection to get behind the firewall at your office via VPN you should have no problem connecting to your office PC or Mac using Jump or other RDP or VNC client software.

I would love to hear how people are connecting to their home computers without opening a port on their home firewall. Are you using a client that connects to an intermediary server or are you using Port Forwarding?

Splashtop uses port forwarding.

Thanks again. I went to the website and noted several posters were unable to get the app to work on their computers. It's possible that every app has such posters but it scared me. IF it works as it should it looks like a great app.

Do you use it regularly?

I use it daily - I was just using it in the drive-thru at Portillos (notoriously long lines).

With LMI/free, it is all transparent. I install a program on the host and then I can log into my account anywhere I have internet access and get to any computer I have setup. I have no idea how it works, but you have me curious now.

New here. I was looking for some help connecting my iPad and my PC using Splashtop. I have the newest versions installed and am on the same network but my iPad does not find my PC. PC firewall is off as well as antivirus. I am using Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Win7/64 here. I bought the iPad app. Then d/l the win splashtop remote program and installed it on the PC.

I have a port forwarding function in the router, and for the external ports plugged in the range 6783-6785, plugged in my LAN IP for the internal address (I already set a static IP for my PC) and in the iPad client, I added the PC and used the WAN IP address (What Is My IP Address - Shows Your IP Address).

That worked for me.

Hey Guys,

I want to play Full Tilt Poker on my iPad via a remote connection to my PC either via WiFi or 3G. What is the most reliable software to do this with that works via wifi or 3G, is fast and super responsive, and that you would recommend?

Thanks!!

I'm looking for a remote desktop app that will access my iMac, PC and Mac Pro server. Big on Easy of Use!! Currently run Chicken in VNC to connect from my iMac to the Mac Pro. Used logmein before for PC to PC, but do not want to pay a Yearly fee..

Splashtop over Wifi. Very fast and carries audio. I use it for Pokerstars.

remote desktop with turn-on computer feature?

Hi, I just got an iPad, and I just got Splashtop. It seems to work great over WiFi at home, but I haven't used it away from home yet. I have a PC with Windows 7. I'm wondering if there are any remote desktop apps where you can actually access a computer that's turned off? I can tell from some pissed-off reviews that LogMeIn Ignition used to have that option, but then they took it away. I would have paid the $29.99 for it if they still had that feature. Any others that do have it?

Thanks. New here BTW. :)

Be aware that if you boot to the welcome screen, Splashtop Remote won't work until a user logs into that PC. I don't see Splashtop being usable for remote 24/7 unattended maintenance work.

First off, welcome!

Last night, I found a [free] app in the store called "Wake." I haven't messed with it at all (planning on that today) but it is supposed to allow you to send "wake on LAN" messages to your PC. According to the web site, your PC needs to be hard-wired with an ethernet cable and there's some things to set up. It's a separate app - it's supposed to only wake the computer. You'd need another app - a remote login - to actually access your PC.

But, it sounded promising enough that for free I thought I'd give it a try. I thought it might be nice to wake my computer up when I needed it versus leaving it on all the time.

I do know that it doesn't work merely by downloading/installing the app ... I've already tried that. This may be too geeky to admit, but I am looking forward to fiddling with it to see if I can make it work. :D

Anyway, just offering it up as something to try.

Marilyn

Thanks for the advice. :) Would the "wake on LAN" thing work for a laptop using WiFi?

No, it only works with a cable ethernet plugged in. I suspect this is because the ethernet port is never truly off, while wifi is completely powered down when the computer is off or asleep.
