Best Remote Desktop App

Thanks for the advice. :) Would the "wake on LAN" thing work for a laptop using WiFi?

No, it only works with a cable ethernet plugged in. I suspect this is because the ethernet port is never truly off, while wifi is completely powered down when the computer is off or asleep.

I figured that. I guess that means I'll just plug in my laptop to the ethernet cable before I leaver town. First I have to figure how to set up my computer to accept WOL, and that is proving to be very difficult for an idiot like me. Anyone know how to do that?

That makes sense.

On another note, I tried the Splashtop away from home with my PC left on and I couldn't get it to work. But then I was going through the drive-thru at Starbucks and only had half the wifi strength. Does anyone know if that matters?

I'm looking for a remote desktop app that will access my iMac, PC and Mac Pro server. Big on Easy of Use!! Currently run Chicken in VNC to connect from my iMac to the Mac Pro. Used logmein before for PC to PC, but do not want to pay a Yearly fee..

:D

I bought the App called jump and it works well. It's not free but worth the money

+1 on this. I have tried just about all of the rdp clients and to me this best fits my needs. Seamlessly works over both wifi or 3g. Automatically wakes the pc. I have it installed an a few family members computers for when they need help. Very very useful. :D

Splashtop just added wake-on-lan

Hi, I just got an iPad, and I just got Splashtop. It seems to work great over WiFi at home, but I haven't used it away from home yet. I have a PC with Windows 7. I'm wondering if there are any remote desktop apps where you can actually access a computer that's turned off? I can tell from some pissed-off reviews that LogMeIn Ignition used to have that option, but then they took it away. I would have paid the $29.99 for it if they still had that feature. Any others that do have it?

Thanks. New here BTW. :)

We've actually just added the Wake-on-LAN feature to Splashtop - its in the most recent update.

Woo-hoo! I'll update it! :D
A few questions:

- Is there any sort of program I need to install - and instructions on how to do it - to get my computer to accept Wake-on-LAN?
- Does it need to be a really strong WIFI or 3G signal for Splashtop to work? I can get it to work from home (strong WIFI), but not yet while away from home.

I guess the update isn't ready yet. But I'm excited to try it out when it is!

I'm new to the whole concept of a Remote Desktop. I have a home computer with Windows XP Media Center Edition. What is the best iPad app for me to remote into my home computer?
Does Splashtop work with Media Center Edition of XP?

Thanks!

The worst part is if the app doesn't work or I don't know how to set up MY computer nor even if the app actually WORKS with Vista Home Ed you have paid for it so you're just out the money.

New iPad user - splashtop issue

Hi, recently got an iPad for work... and got splashtop today to try and connect with work PC. I've installed the software on my xp-pro ver 5.1 laptop, and entered the IP splashtop told me to on the iPad splashtop set up... but it says it can't connect to my computer.

I have another guy here running logmein, same computer and operating system as me, and he has no issue.

Can someone point me to any obvious things to check?

I'm behind my company's firewall, connected to our wifi, and my computer is on the network.

Thanks

Why don't you contact their tech support? I can't post the link to their web site since I don't have enough posts yet, but go to splashtop dot com to find their tech support.

Be aware of a Splashtop limitation: if you need to log onto a PC that boots to the welcome screen, you're outta luck. If there's a user at the remote PC who can log in for you, it will work fine.

Unfortunately, Splashtop is unusable for remote unattended maintenance due to that limitation.

yeah thats why I set my PC and Mac side startup to auto.

This thread title is a bit misleading... best remote desktop is a moving target, depending on the user's needs.

I haven't tried some of the others like Jump, etc. But TeamViewer will survive a reboot and allows remote log-in. I know that logmein free/PC does as well... so I assume that logmein Ignition will also allow remote log-in.

I'm embarrassed to say I don't know what you mean by this... I never log out of my work computer, I just lock the workstation...

Like this (typically seen after a reboot, if not setup to skip the welcome screen):

OK, thanks... ya, I never turn my computer off or log out... just lock the workstation so that shouldn't be an issue... but it just can't find the computer... set to the IP and port that the PC-side splashtop application says to have... our IT people say "we don't support that" so no help there I'm afraid... and the splash top tech support section seems very thin, lots of unanswered and unresolved questions there... guess I'm out $1.99
