The iPad 5 hasn’t yet been announced, but some case makers already have iPad 5 cases and covers ready to be ordered. How is that possible? According to Joanna Stern from ABC News, companies like Gumdrop, M-Edge or Hard Candy have made thousands of cases without ever seeing the new iPad tablets.

Gumdrop said that they have already spent more than $250,000 on preparing these first iPad 5 cases. Gumdrop’s CEO, Tim Hickman, said they have worked closely with the Chinese factories that are responsible of making the iPad in order to obtain the right dimensions and designs needed to make the cases. He said:

"If we are wrong we lose a bunch of money, but if we are right, we can make a lot of money. It is still a gamble, but in this world, it is the game that is being played."

M-Edge’s CTO Adam Ashley, says they are relying mostly on leaked photos and rumors when producing early iPad 5 cases:

"We analyze the data – the rumors and the photographs – we compile this information and we meet with our product team to assess the confidence level"

Referring to how important it is to have these cases as early as possible, Ashely also said:

"It seems each quarter there is someone else trying to get in the game. Our retail partners like Best Buy and Staples really need product at launch, if you don't have product at launch some other company will."

There are only a few hours that separate us from the event and that’s when cases companies will learn whether their risky bet has paid off or not.
