Don't give up!! Next time, politely ask to speak to the Manager. So far, we've found most all Members get their iPads replaced - so keep on trying.

No luck for me either. After taking mine to the back to the back room,
He came back and said it will cost $269 to replace my ipad2. Not a happy camper.

My iPad 2 had alot of leaking on the screen (when it's dark screen) and after a while stopped working correctly (started freezing). I talked to apple about this and they told me that UPS will come and pick it up.

I never heard from UPS. Some days passed, I dropped the iPad (having a cover on) really ligthly and it got a small crack at the bottom of the iPad (the white section).

I called Apple back and they told me again that UPS will get it, 1 week later UPS comes and picks it up. Now I just heard that they wont repair it because of the small crack.

After reading posts here, I think it's nothing else but pure discrimination and after being a apple customer for a long time now (I have the whole set) out of principle, I'll stop buying their products...

Thanks so much for the post...I live in Alexandria, and just last night I accidentally dropped my ipad 2 (16GB 3G)onto my hardwood floor, no crack but 1/3rd of the screen is bleeding. I guess I will try the Clarendon store to get a free replacement.

My two year old accidentally dropped my month old iPad 2 on the tile floor last night. It had the smart cover on but fell off on impact. The entire front is a spiderweb. It impacted on the left corner. I immediately googled broken iPad screen (after the initial tears had stopped lol) and found this thread. I scheduled an appointment online at the genius bar in Shadyside (Pittsburgh). Has anyone had dealings with this store and know if they have the one time replacement policy?
I received my iPad as a gift and I absolutely love it. My daughter plays educational games on it and watches Netflix and youTube. At 2 and a half it's amazing to watch her use it. I
will be devastated if they don't replace it after reading all of the stories on here. Wish me luck! My appt is at 1:20 this afternoon.

I hope it goes well for you, let us know how you get on.

They replaced it for free! At first he said it would be $299 to replace it, then he said let me go in the back to make sure we have one and we will go from there. When he came back out he said, do you want the good news or the bad news. I of course said bad news. The bad news was that he couldn't transfer my data, but the good news was they would replace it for free, this one time. I just need to update this one to iOs5 and get my stuff from iCloud. I'm loving Apple right now :)

That's fantastic news, I'm really pleased for you......both!

I had no luck. Dropped the IPad Thursday and the screen cracked badly. Took it into the store, and both the person at the genius bar and the manager said I had to pay $419. I specifically pointed out this thread and others, but they refused to do anything more. I was very disappointed and angry at the disparate treatment, though I was careful to remain polite at the store.

Got home and received an e-mail from Apple asking for feedback on my genius bar visit. In my response, I explained what happened. I received a call. Initially, I was excited that maybe the person on the phone would help, but no such luck. After talking for a while, she said they gave a strict policy of not replacing iPads for accidental damage. I told her that what I was seeing online made that difficult to understand, and she said the policy had changed a while ago. Now that I am seeing that someone else got a free replacement today (congratulations kaykaysmom!), it now just looks like they are lying to me. Very disappointing. I hope others continue to have better luck than I did.

Just wondering what store you went to? I did not ask for a replacement and was prepared to pay the $299 they told me initially. I guess maybe they felt bad for me, I brought my adorable daughter with me as well. Haha. Mine was only purchased this october 6, maybe that had something to do with it? Sorry you weren't as lucky :(

Sorry to hear about your situation. All I can say is keep trying different Apple stores.

I got mine replaced yesterday with a brand new one. Just told the Genius what had happened, he asked me if I had AppleCare I said no, he asked me if I had my data backed up, which I already did. So he went back and came back with new iPad 2 ( looked brandnew might be a refurb, who knows) Signed a two papers, and he handed me the iPad and a copy of the receipt.

Good luck, I know you will be given a brand new iPad as a replacement.

I also got turned down for a replacement. Maybe too old since I got it on March 11, the day they came out. Has anyone had luck at the stores in Columbus, OH or Cleveland or Akron, OH ?

I'm actually quiet surprised to read that many got their I pads replaced. However I'm sure it's not a policy that is there in all countries.Bcoz it's absolutely not possible here where apple don't have much sales like else where.
So when I had my I pad dropped from my car seat (I'm usually very very careful with my iPad.) my heart literally stopped lol.
But thank god nothing happend and I have been doubly careful since then.
But anyways great service from apple if they replace it for free at least in some countries.

To those who didn't get their ipad2 replaced, don't be discouraged...try another store. I know it might be an inconvenience, but its cheaper than buying a new one. Also, don't go in and expect them to do it, or ask for them to. Most people who didn't get it done "asked" about the "free" replacement. Go in...be honest..and just hope...please don't point out this thread or fuss. This thread is just testimonials to what "can" happen.
Hope you get it replaced. I got mine done, and my sister did also last week in NYC. And I live in NC

My Story

Just thought i'd share my story with you guys from my experience here in England in case people were wondering the policy here. I had previously had an iPhone 4 replaced under the same policy at the Milton Keynes store so knew about the possibility of it getting done for my iPad.

Same scenario, dropped, smashed iPad 2 screen.

Booked appointment with Genius store at Milton Keynes, were my phone was replaced. Got told it was £200 to replace, that was it, no offer. Was bummed, especially when i saw the person after me get the genius who replaced my iPhone 4. Maybe it just wasn't my day.

Luckily i work all over the country, so today, knowing i would be all over the place, had an appointment booked for midday at the store in the Arnsdale Centre in Manchester, and a following appointment at half 2 at the store in Leicester knowing i would be going past there on my way home.

Rocked up to the Manchester store, same story, £200 no offer, nothing. Still gutted, but i thought persistence pays. Arrive at the Leicester store for my appointment there, 10 minutes later, leaving with a free replacement. God was i happy, and job done :-)

So as others had mentioned, if you get turned away, if you are lucky enough to be able to, try another store. Even then it appears to be random as the same store that did my iPhone didn't offer my iPad the same treatment, they must have been all out of freebies that day!

One final funny thing that happened at the Leicester store, as i was checking in to my appointment the Genius said, "oh hey i see you used the app to book your appointment, you can actually check-in on the app too, let me show you." He then noticed my phone was Jailbroken (5 icon dock!) and said..."hey have you jailbroken your phone?" I just smiled at him and said, "dunno what your talking about mate..." he just laughed and said, "i saw nothing...!"

Gotta love apple, and there endless pursuit of consumer happiness...!
