Has anyone in australia had a replacement iPad from a broken one? I dropped mine tonight when was trying to walk and put the smart cover back on, and I'm devastated... I have been going through the posts and most of them seem to be from US and pps getting replacements there, so look g to see if anyone has any luck in Oz?? Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

Yes I've thought the same thing, I'm from Brisbane too. I can tell you that they do know about this at the Chermside Apple store as I know someone who worked there. Whether or not they are doing it now I can't tell you but I do know someone who had an iPhone replaced after dropping it in the toilet. So all you can do is try, make an appointment with the Genius Bar, be honest be distraught and do not expect it or mention a replacement offer and see what happens. I wish you the best of luck!

Not sure what the manic word was to get a free replacement. My experience was way different I went told them my screen was cracked they had me make an appointment came back 10 min before my appointment kept me waiting for 30 min past my time only to tell me it would be $420 to replace for only a cracked digitizer. Doing some research you can get them replaced for anywhere $70 to $160 which seems more reasonable.

Count me as one of the lucky ones! Two days before Xmas my 8 year old fell down concrete steps and dropped the iPad. I managed to grab him but the the iPad wasn't so lucky -cracked corner and a crack that ran down the entire left side. I was going to take it to a repairman but I read this forum. Anyway, the day after Christmas all of a sudden it gave me the temp warning and wouldn't leave that screen. I didn't have it anywhere hot so I let it sit for a day and no luck. Made an appointment at the genius bar. Told entire story - I was almost in tears - the employee looked at me and said "you must have that backwards - it must have gotten so hot that your child dropped it, right? Wink, wink! Because that way I can cover it under warranty". Went behind the counter and gave me a brand new iPad. Needless to say, I feel very lucky and I am an Apple customer for life! This was in Virginia at the Tyson's Corner store. They are awesome!

I must just be unlucky

My 6 year old son just dropped my 4 month old iPad 2 and cracked the screen. I called the Apple store to set up an appt. and when they asked what happened, I told them. They told me it's $299 minimum, and even then it probably won't be repaired, but replaced with a refurbished model.

I'm going in on Saturday, but already don't like what I'm hearing. Is there any magic words to get this "free replacement" ???

Just be honest, humble, DO NOT expect it, tell them you can't afford it, be distraught, which I'm sure you are. Good luck!

I think what it boils down to is the luck of the draw as to you work with at the store. My guy was wonderful and he made it work so that it could be covered under the warranty. Obviously that hasn't happened with others here unfortunately. Like everyone else says - just be honest, act distraught (I really was almost in tears). I also had my iPhone on the counter and my son was playing with his Itouch - don't know if that has anything to do with it but at least it showed I buy a lot of apple products! Good luck!

Oh, the other thing I did was research the best customer service reviews for different stores in my area - there are about 5 stores within 20 miles of me.

I like the idea of researching stores for the best customer service. I'm going to pass on your tip plus the other suggestions to my coworker who cracked her iPad 1 screen by accident. Thank you!

My step son (17yrs old) received his first iPad on Christmas day. Got a call from him today that he dropped it and screen is broke and corner is messed up. So I guess that means we will be going to the local Apple store and giving the honest sob story. I'm so furious and devistated at the same time. He hasn't been out of his room since it happened. Wish us luck at the Apple store that we get that "friendly" genius!!!!!

I dropped my ipad and shattered the screen while in Australia. I took it to the Doncaster store, and the person there said it would cost AUD$369 to replace the ipad. I tried again at the University Village store in Seattle, and was told that it would cost US$319 to replace the ipad. Neither store offered the free replacement. The real bummer is that it's not even my personal ipad- it belongs to the elementary school where I am a teacher. I do feel awful I messed it up, but I'm really bummed at having to pay for something that I don't even get to keep in the long run.

Is it worthwhile for me to try one more store, or does Apple keep a database of genius bar visits? Will they somehow "flag" me as bringing up the same problem multiple times at different stores? I've never asked outright for a free replacement, I've only told the truth about what happened and waited for their response.

Is it possible for an iPad screen to just crack? I gave a large crack (one side to the other) and yet I have not dropped it and keep a cover on it nd store inside a padded sleeve. I'm at a loss. I bought AppleCare but now read it may not be covered. I'm ver upset.

Did you notice them typing extra into their screens? You've got nothing to lose at this stage, maybe even throw in that it's not yours and to whom it does belong perhaps

Not good! no I haven't heard of that happening. No one else could have played with it without you knowing or sat on it?
All you can do is make an appointment at a Genius Bar, tell them your story and you never know, you may just get a new iPad! Good luck!

I broke the glass 3 weeks after I purchased my iPad 2. I made the appointment and they told me $239 to replace the unit. I might try to buy a new screen for $50 and repair it myself. If it don't work I'll try to get the refurbished one.
