Woo hoo - thank you God and Apple!! Went to store tonight and they replaced my 32gb wifi for free!!! It was still working but glass was rough sliding fingers across all those cracks. Cat is out of the dog house;-)

Congrats. Glad it worked out.

Replacement IPAD2

Hi everyone,
Yesterday night while returning from the library, I accidentally dropped my ipad2 straight onto the concrete from about 4 feet. And of course, upon inspection, the screen had cracked nearly the entire length of the ipad. Also, the corner was really damaged.

So, this morning I took it to the apple store and explained exactly what happened, and the guy says "no problem, we'll replace it for free this one time". I was extremely surprised this happened, that's pretty amazing CS. So, in a few days I have to go back to the apple store to pick up the ipad.

Does anyone know if apple supplies a brand new replacement ipad2 or is at a refurbished model?

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan,

If I were you, I would only say THANK YOU, APPLE! I would not bother thinking whether it is refurbished or brand new. It is replaced only by courtesy and not by warranty (as this incident is normally not covered by warranty). Factory refurbished item is normally as good as brand new in terms of function, if not better.

Exactly. It was refurbished by apple directly and not some random place you know nothing about.

Is it possible that as the ipad2 gets older they are not interested in the old ones for improvement purposes anymore?

It's not so much the model of the iPad as it is the operating system. The IOS upgrades should add features to all models. Of course, it can't add model improvements, such as cameras, but I expect all iPad models will be fully supported for some years to come.

At some point down the line it won't have the ability to handle certain updates , kinda like original iPhone around the time 3GS came out.

I purchased my iPad 2 from apple.com in April 2011 - I dropped it at work in July 2011 and cracked the screen. It still worked though. I didn't even get around to taking it into the Apple Store at the Domain in Austin, TX until today, the middle of August 2011. 10 minutes later I was out the door with a new iPad 2 for FREE. They were so friendly and didn't even question my situation!

Using my Ipad 1 last night while watching the Phillies game..no issues. Head up to bed turn it back on and half the screen is BLACK! No dropping. Tried rebooting reseting, no luck.

I have an appointment on Monday at noon and I am hoping for a similar outcome as the ones that I have read in this thread.

I would really expect something that costs $600 to last more than 16 months!

Sounds like a backlighting failure. They should fix that for you.

Excellent service

Recently cracked the screen of my iPad 2 by dropping a 'tea spoon' onto the very edge, totally gutted. Made appointment at local apple store who offered a replacement immediately, no fuss, amazing service and really is the reason I will be going back time after time for new product launches.

Must have been a big teaspoon! ;) Glad to hear that Apple is still looking after us...

Just got back from the apple store in Ardmore, Pa.

Had to battle with a manager & employee for 10 minutes to get a replacement down from $300 to $150...fun.

Like I said after 15 months of use 75% of the screen went black.

Sounds like you got a good deal.

Ya...when they said $300 I laughed and asked to speak with a manager.

$150 seemed reasonable, but it was like pulling teeth...:(

You guys have crappy apple stores in your area. I've had my iPad 2 replaced for free after breaking the USB connector. I also got my Mac mini replaced for free after breaking clips that hold in RAM,then having other issues after they replaced logic board.
