Cracked screen - got a free replacement from apple on 5th ave.

Dropped my ipad2 and it got 2 nasty cracks on it. My girlfriend brought it to the apple store in NYC on fifth avenue (even though it was bought at walmart). She simply told them that it had cracked and acted politely, and they replaced it free of charge. The Best advice I'll give anyone who has cracked their screen and is here seeking some comfort or advice is that Apple is a company who prides itself on amazing products and Great customer service. Treat them really nicely, and don't lose your cool. They WILL reciprocate.

What's the case with engraved backs?

I received a 64GB Ipad 2 as a graduation gift from my father in May, and I absolutely love it to death. Like many of the people I have seen post to this thread, I carry it around with me everywhere. I have a Smart cover, which works okay at protecting the screen I suppose, but I have a lot of issues with it. The main issue is it's uncanny ability to come off or unfold at the most inconvenient times. Today I had just that sort of experience.
There are some wonderful lightning storms going on right now, so I grabbed my beloved iPad to go attempt to catch some videos of it. I had it propped up by the Smart cover on my driveway, and what do you know, it decided to collapse today, causing the iPad to fall over. I didn't think it was a big deal since it didn't really "drop", just fell over, but alas, I now have about a 2 inch crack in the bottom right corner, right edge to bottom edge in a sort of arc.
I have a little hope after reading through all the replies here, but I -really- don't want my father to find out about it, as he has a bit of a temper and I'd rather not get yelled at. There is a message engraved on the back, and I guess my question is whether this one-time replacement will allow for a new -engraved- one as well? And should I mention the Smart cover unfolding or not?
I am so devastated about this whole thing ]:

Cracked Screen

I had a similar issue where the smart cover came off and it dropped to the floor causing a crack clean across the screen. I saw this post and thought hurray so I contacted a friend that works at an Apple store and asked what the deal was. I was told this is a customer loyalty deal, some they fix for free, some they don't.

Thought it was worth the try rather than pay $300 to have it replaced. I made an apt and less than 10 min later walked out with a new iPad 2 (probably referb) but looks new. I told the tech exactly what happened and it was no big deal just said they may not be able to do it for free in the future if it was to happen again.

Totally awesome, that Apple cares or has enough foresight to know this will bring a customer back again and again. I am a PC advocate but after having the iPhone for years and love the iPad 2; I may now be willing to move to Apple simply due to the Awesome customer service.

Thank you Apple and thank you whoever started this blog!!:)

I have a great cushy cover for my new iPad2 bought at Best Buy about 5weeks ago. Last night I was sitting at the counter in the kitchen and had the cover turned back to prop it up as designed. I went into the other room to get something and 1 of my cats must have jumped up on counter and knocked iPad to floor. It of course landed face down on the tile. I have a nice sunburst of cracks on one side with tendrils across the whole surface. I can still use it. I am so glad that I found this forum. Best Buy said call Apple since I didn't buy their Geek Squad protection. Fortunately we have several Apple stores in the area. I will update with iTunes before I head out Saturday to see what kind of support I get. Thanks so much for the hope as I was devastated. I had been a bit uncertain about getting the iPad due to the flash issue. (I have an iPod and iPhone already.) Once I got it and started using it I have depended on it more and more, so I hope I get a replacement. I have 32 wifi only. Will let you all know.

I have also considered experimenting with glass scratch repair, but wasn't sure how they might affect the touchscreen, so I would prefer to stay with Apple support.

Hearing all these awful stories about cracked iPad screens gives me the willies. Even if Apple is replacing them for now, I hope to keep using my $1000 3G 64 GB iPad 2 for many years and would prefer not to break it before it I get tired of using it. Every time I pick it up now I feel like I'm handling some fragile piece of expensive Steuben Glass.

So, does anyone have good stories about how some piece of protective gear (a screen protector or case) appears to have prevented their iPad from suffering the cracked glass syndrome? If I knew of a good and effective way to protect my expensive toy I would buy it in a heart beat.

As it is, I have a soft padded envelope that I keep it in when I'm not using it, but when I am using it, it is sitting naked and unprotected.

Otter box is good for the iphone

Sent from my iPad 2 using iPF

Woo hoo - thank you God and Apple!! Went to store tonight and they replaced my 32gb wifi for free!!! It was still working but glass was rough sliding fingers across all those cracks. Cat is out of the dog house;-)

I can't imagine not having a case. I have the smart cover with a Belkin back. It's not ideal. The smart cover looked a lot cooler in the commercials. I really loved my first gen Apple cover and i've heard that Belkin or somebody makes one similar. Of course you can't beat Otterbox for protección but it is bulky.

The Otterbox stuff looks nice - though a bit expensive. I'll ponder getting one of those. You can see a nice review of it here;

wwwinsanelygreatmac's Channel - YouTube

Might want to check Costco. Otterbox for iPad 1 was selling for half-price at Costco vs. other retail stores at one point. You might find a similar bargain for iPad 2. Even if you don't have a Costco membership, you might ask a friend or family member to pick one up for you if there's a bargain.

I received an Otterbox, but didn't care for its weight.

It must be nice to have a Costco nearby, but there are none within hundreds of miles of me.

Looking at the video reviews on Insanely Great Mac's YouTube Channel I see the Otterbox for the iPad 1 was much bulkier and heavier than the version for the iPad 2.

It doesn't matter, because you can order online, as long as the price is right.

Costco - OtterBox iPad 2 Defender Case

You can even have someone with a membership order and send to you.

My 16G iPad2 dropped and cracked after having it for only five days. Horrified I brought it back to Verizon Wireless where I bought it. They told me they could do nothing and to bring it to Apple Store. I did and they replaced it for free "this one time". What fantastic customer service!
