do tried apps leave anything behind?

That was /is my concern, if I try out apps, dump them, will they leave bits to occupy memory.I suppose now if someone says, "not enough to worry about" I won't.

Easiest way is just do a factory reset every 12 months, I do this on the computer and iPads, keeps them clean tidy and fast

You could do iPads as often as you like, as it's a relatively quick process compared to a PC

I do this every three months on all of my iOS, whether they need it or not. All it takes is 30 minutes of my time.
