I posted that couple weeks ago. I'm not sure of the answer that with a y cord it is able to play directly from the hard drive. Maybe you should reformat your movie to ipad format standard with handbrake program and update the results to me.
Update:
jwjohnson on forum said that it is able to play from the movie straight off the hard drive as long as its in the required format .mov, .m4v, .mp4 and in the size acceptable resolution for the iPad in order to play directly from iFile default media player.
