Mmmmmmm..........

That's it. I'm coming to your house to eat. Tropical jam one day. Now a delicious BBQ. I just ate dinner and I'm hungry again! :)

In 1984, I visited Colombia for the first time with my wife. We travelled overnight by bus from Bogotá to her home area, Chiscas in the Boyaca region. We arrived in Chiscas in the early hours of market day, and these pictures are of the weekly market in the town. The following day, we accompanied my wife's aunt to another town, El Espino, whwere there was a very large market. I enjoyed visitng the cafe area - food stalls ans very smoky cooking / BBQ stalls sited under a corrugated iron roof. It was good to wander around there and select dishes to eat. The food was excellent - very tasty.

The two pictures with buses were taken in 1988, when we went to Armero, the town which succumbed to the mud slide from a volcano.

The dome shaped structure is an oven - probably used chiefly for bread making.

On my first visit, I suffered awful toothache in Chiscas. I needed aspirin for pain relief. On our return to Bogota, at a lower altitude than Chiscas, the toothache went. Back in London, my dentist treated a cavity, and explained that air trapped in it had expanded at altitude, causing the terrible ache. (I wonder where the moral is).

I have heard that Thorntons Chocolate is in trouble. They could be closing lots of their shops. I hope not as I for one adore their chocs. 

Some years back, I bought a chocolates filled nougat cake with a chocolate coated top. For a small fee they would pipe wording of your choice in whit chocolate onto the lid.   

If our local shop goes I will have to buy their lines under the M&S brand. 

no! Seriously. It's one of my favourite choc shops. I love their scottish tablet(fudge) and nougat. I do hope not. More and more of the traditional British varieties are disappearing under other large names and then they disappear forever. Anyone remember Callard & Bowser nougat? Gone forever.

Callard & Bowser - Oh yes!  (And that's the closest I can get to to my very local Boxer Dog  )

It's not 100% gloom re Thorntons. They will be holding onto their shops in major retail centres, which is another nail in the coffin of small centres threatened bu huge superstores etc etc.

We love their fudge. Rum & raisin. They also do a line of dietary chocolates.

The bakery sells cheese & onion bread, sun dried tomato bread, Stilton & walnut, date & walnut, Spelt bread. Campalou, campalette and campagrain bread. We've had trial samples of rice crispy bread and cornflake bread. They were lovely. That is all I can remember but there are all sorts of foreign breads as well.

Toast and honey.! Yum! I'm the only one in the family who likes honey. Sigh! Richard, I had a specialist walnut twisted loaf for a sandwich.

That sandwich sounds great. I must see the baker at Saturday's Market.  

My wife has to be careful with which breads she eats. Wholemeal is OK. White breads will cause severe digestive pains. So she cannot eat Naan (she suffered after our Indian meal with Naan and white rice), brioche breads. It's such a pity, but trying out new breads can be fun.

I tried the Scottish tablet but there weren't any flash apps for it!

Spelt bread......of course it's spelt bread, how else would you spell it.......unless it's actually cheese in which case it's spelt completely wrong!

I feel a pun tax coming on...:D

(otherwise, that was brilliant. I'm a huge fan of good wordplay.)

Delicious stuff. I don't think I've the teeth for it now. 

I'm also partial to Kendal Mint Cake, so long as it isn't too old and hard.

Did I mention that traditional sweet shop in Rochester High Street many posts ago? It's well worth the visit fellow Kentish posters. 

I've always said that the only thing Kendal Mint Cake lacks is a little more sugar. 
