What's new

Gardening!

Richard i have tried crushed egg shells and coarse gravel but they still got to them,I'm afraid i have resorted to the chemical deterrent,if i hadn't there would be very little left now,i haven't heard of the variety they don't like but if i find it i will let you know.

Thanks. Yes, we use the pellets too. I also check out shady sections of wall or large stones to root out the groups and families of snails.

me too,the year before last was a bad year,we had so many snails, last year not as bad,the resident Hedgehogs take care of the slugs but one got by them and i found some of my Hosta's with big chunks eaten away,it was hiding under a pot,i jumped on it in frustration lol......also the Blackbirds love snails, they do a nice job of keeping them down.

Oh lord, the vision of you jumping up and down on that slug is hilarious. I tread on them deliberately but not jump. Interesting vision though. I know how you feel. Once the leaf is eaten, it destroys its looks for the rest of the year.
Unfortunately it's raining today so I bet those little blighters are out in force. I was going to take a photo of my new ducks but I will wait for it to clear.

yes its raining here too,i'm so glad we have Hedgehogs in the garden to keep the slugs down,i guess snails are too crunchy for them lol.

I'm sure our feathered friends sort them out. Lol. I try to keep slug pellets to a minimum due to them. We have buddleia etc... To encourage my little friends. I haven't seen my hedgehogs yet. We have had a run of those blasted rats again. They keep nicking my chickens food.

yes i worry about putting pellets down for that reason, the Hedgehogs and birds,i kind of hope they have the sense to stay clear of them.

It's not as bad as foxes who keep nicking your chickens.;)

Too true. Those little blighters are the worst. Don't get me wrong, I admire their beauty and dexterity but DONT EAT MY CHICKENS! There are plenty of wild rabbits to eat.

i remember my grandad having the problem with foxes when i was young, they would often take chickens yet it was out in the country where there was plenty of wildlife for them, must be a case of easy pickings.

I was in Waitrose at the weekend and there were lots of people taking chickens in there.....

Definitely! Much easier to catch a tame chicken than chasing a wily rabbit across the field. Grrr. We lost a Khaki Campbell duck in the last fox raid so these new ducks will replace one of the lost ones. We have a wire fence about 6/7 foot high but they dig under it and catch us out by sheer perseverance. Wily fox.

Gab! Stop it. I was drinking at that very moment. Tea going down the wrong tube is unpleasant. I haven't recovered from my scotch egg choking yet!
