Getting mail while in sleep mode

Should the iPad 2 be able to receive mail while it's asleep? I ask because when I close the cover, I hear the click that it's in sleep mode but I occasionally hear the mail sound that mail has arrived (it has).
Just curious as I don't want to turn the ipad off for 2 hours or so if I'm not using it but I also don't want to deplete the battery any more than needed.

Yes - the iPad can and does receive email when in Sleep mode. It 'wakes up' very briefly to check the mail - depending on how frequently you've asked it to check - and, if there's mail plays the 'You have mail' alert (unless you've set it to Mute) and then goes back to sleep again. The battery depletion is minimal, so no need to worry.
