HDMI Mirroring and Internet not compatible? (iPad 1)

My grandfather has an ipad 1 and recently bought an ipad to hdmi connector. When he plugs it in, the mirroring works and looks great on our TV. However, the internet stops working. The WiFi setting indicates that it's still on in the settings, and it even displays a connection signal to our home network. It just doesn't connect to any websites or apps that use the internet. They just time out and say we aren't connected to the internet. Once we unplug the adapter, the internet starts working again.

Any help?
