I'd assume that the appropriate format would be downloaded to the particular device , for example by downloading say ' eBay' app , would download and be optimized for either phone or ipad accordingly ! That's my experience .

As far as the Apps go you still have to buy them for both iphone and iPad because they are formatted differently. Maybe some would work on both but not many. Isn't this true?

There are three possibilities.

The best is that you're talking about a Universal app. These apps contain different UI elements for the iPad and iPhone, and will adjust according to what device they are downloaded on. Pay once, and you get the app optimized for both devices. You can tell a universal app because it has a (+) plus mark in the price tag. You pay a slight to moderate penalty in the size of the app, since it must contain the screen graphics and other resources appropriate for both devices.

The second is that the app is different for each device. You pay twice (if it's not free). The penalty becomes a plus in that the app will be no bigger than it needs to be for that device.

Last, there is no equivalent app for the second device. In the case of iPhone apps you can still run most of them on the iPad, either at the original size or 2X mode (which looks bad most of the time). It's a UI compromise, better than nothing, if you absolutely have to have that app's features on the iPad. SpeedTest by Ookla is a good example of an iPhone only app I like to use on my iPad.

You can tell if the iPhone app is compatible with the iPad by reading the Compatibility section under Information in the Details tab of the app's App Store page.

When searching for iPhone only apps in the App Store on the iPad you need to be sure to choose iPhone. It's a button (after the search) at the top left in iOS 6. In iOS 7 it is one of the menu items. It will say either iPad Only or iPhone Only; the former by default.

Apps that are dependant on iPhone-only features (like SMS) will not work, or be missing features on the iPad, and probably will not show as iPad compatible.

You can't run an iPad only app on an iPhone, in case anyone was wondering.

I'm not certain that the x2 is still available for iPhone apps on an iPad, or at least not all of them, this is the Apple Store app which now appears to fill more of the screen on the iPad and no x2 button......

EDIT: this is iOS 7, presumably iOS 6 hasn't changed.

Are you by chance using an iPad Mini? That might make a difference. Given the difference in resolutions and screen size the 1X mode probable makes no sense. Or more likely, the 1X mode already fills most of the screen making 2X impractical.

I'd probably say on the mini it'd be an optimised zoom of the iPhone version and wouldn't have the 'x2' feature. Sent from my awesome iPhone 5S 64gb Gold using ipf

The iphone apps that you can use for the iPad can only be viewed in portrait mode. I mostly view in landscape.

Really? I'd have to check all my apps, but really don't want to go there but there are some still viewable in both modes. MessageMe is one.

That would depend on whether the iPhone app has a landscape view. Many don't, but some do.

And then it took me a few minutes to track down an iPhone (only) app that had a landscape mode so I could test it on the iPad, just to make sure my foot was a safe distance from my mouth. The winner was. . . Weightbot by Tapbots. Yes, its landscape view worked on the iPad.

Cool app, btw, if you want a single purpose weight tracking app with cool bells and whistles; and dings and motor sounds, and. . .

That's unfortunate ...!

I was going to ask why, but I saw your other post below. Makes sense. My phone is almost two years old and will be getting a new one when the contract is done. I will probably wait until the iPhone 6 or 7 comes out.

Yes, it is on my Mini, I hadn't considered that it would be different between the Mini and the full sized iPad, I'm used to the Mini just being a scaled down version with no other differences.

I doubt there are any other differences. But now I'm wondering if the iPad 2 might do the same thing, since it has the same screen resolution as the Mini.
