how to download recorded TV from harddrive recorded from Samsung TV

Hi,
recently the external hard drive had a glitch and the recorded TV show from my Samsung TV wouldn't work. I called Samsung and they said you cannot transfer any recorded shows onto a computer or burn a disc due to their copyright policy. I do not want to record shows again to have them disappear again. Does anyone have an idea of how to burn a DVD of recorded shows or be able to download to my computer? Thanks
