No grapes here - harvest has been brought in

For those who enjoy the 'photo-realism' of William Harnett, I thought a few more of his remarkable paintings might be fun to add - over the years we've travelled to most of the 'major' cities in the USA and if an art museum(s) was there, then we made a visit, so I've seen a lot of his paintings 'in person' and must say that images on a computer screen just cannot do them justice - one wants to go up to the painting and take an instrument or animal off the hook or pull off a piece of paper that seems to be projecting from the surface - he was born in Ireland (1848) but was brought to Philadelphia shortly after his birth, became an American citizen, and died fairly young (1892). BUT - just a few more of his works - Dave :)

This is not sunset. I took these photos an hour ago. Sunset would be now, if it were visible through the clouds.

I would just love to see his artwork in person.....such amazing work! I'm amazed at that open book!

What lovely scenes! Just beautiful!

Johanna - just curious (if you know) what kind of grapes are shown below? Assume being in Austria (and white grapes) that these are likely Riesling, but would not be surprised if Pinot Gris or Blanc (doubt Chardonnay) - now I'm a wine enthusiast, so quite interested - I do have books dedicated to wine leaf patterns but just too lazy at the moment to look through the possibilities - OH, retirement! :D BUT, thanks for any further information - Dave :)

They're not Riesling. Those grapes would look different at that time of the year. They're harvested in September/October. (I know that Riesling is quite common here.)
I didn't try these grapes, or else I would be certain what kind they are. They look like Muscat Ottonel.

Wonderful paintings Dave. He had a marvellous grasp of lighting and shadow play. That violin, a real three-dimentional effect where, as you say, you would think to just reach out and take it down. I love the hunting paraphernalia as well, especially the obvious necessity, that little jug;)

I echo what Andrew said about these images. They are really excellent paintings.

Cheers

Richard :)

Thanks Johanna for your response - a Muscat varietal would make sense in Austria (great varietal in Piedmont Italy) - wife loves that grape - I've had few Austrian wines (despite my EXTENSIVE experience in drinking a LOT of wine in the last 40+ years) - unfortunately in my locale there are just not that much offerings - wish I had more options - Dave :)

Well, I may be getting annoying on this thread but as a retired radiologist, visual images are dear to me and I have many non-medical interests, including art history; PLUS, i'm a classical music enthusiast (my most active forum over many years is the Good-Music-Guide - I'm SonicMan there) - I own about 4K CDs of classical music (YES, Susan says IT'S ridiculous!) - my favorite composer of the Western hemisphere (NOW, this includes North & South America) is Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) - I've just added a 7-CD box to my collection from CPO (a great German company for classical music) of his Symphonies - this increases my discs to 40 for this composer (and probably completes what I want to own - BUT don't hold me to that promise - ;)) - BUT:

CPO is just fabulous in their cover art for many of their offerings (I probably have hundreds?) - for the Villa-Lobos symphony set, nearly all of the cover art for each CD offering is by a Brazilian artist (BTW - Villa-Lobos was also Brazilian but spent most of the 1920s in Paris) named Candido Portinari (1903-1962) - below just 3 images from the 7 CDs in this box set. The music is fabulous and the images fascinating - hope that you enjoy (if not, please let me know - I sometimes get 'carried away' w/ this stuff!) - Dave :)
