What's new

On this day in history.

September 9, 1786 George Washington writes on the abolition of slavery to John F. Mercer:

"I never mean unless some particular circumstance should compel me to it, to possess another slave by purchase, it being among my first wishes to see some plan adopted by which slavery in this country may be abolished by law."

Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.
It took over 75 years and a civil war for the nation to make Washington's dream a reality.

September 9 - 1919 - Alexander Graham Bell and Casey Baldwin's HD-4, a hydrofoil craft, set a world marine speed record.

Thank you for this post, JewelGarden. It is very meaningful. I live less than 5 miles, as the crow flies, from the Wilberforce Oak where William Wilberforce and William Pitt met in 1787 to discuss the abolition of slavery. I think Wilberforce died before he saw his campaign become widely accepted. http://www.darwinslandscape.co.uk/topic.asp?navid=57&tid=200

Thanks, Richard, for the link. What a beautiful site!

September 11th, 2001; the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington D.C. are attacked by terrorists who crash loaded passenger jets into them in what were the deadliest terrorist attacks ever on American soil. A fourth plane was diverted from its presumed target in Washington D.C. when the passengers attacked the hijackers in an attempt to retake the plane. This caused the plane to crash in a Pennsylvania field, killing everybody on board but almost certainly saving many more lives at the intended target in the process.

Hard to believe it was 11 years ago. I still remember that morning as though it happened this morning.

I know what you mean. Most TV stations ran all day coverage with no commercials.

I sat dumbfounded for most of that day in front of the TV, with tears flowing freely.

What a tragic and sad day that was for all.

I visited the site last year not long after the memorial opened, although we couldn't get in.

Very poignant.

Rest in Peace.

Rest in peace and live on in our memories.

It is perhaps appropriate to recall as well that the "Star Spangled Banner" was sung at the beginning of a baseball game for the first time in Cooperstown, New York, on September 11, 1916. We mark our happy days and our saddest days with the music that touches our hearts.

In London, the band at the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace played the American National Anthem. Writing this still moves me.

In 2004, during a trip to Boston, I watched 6 baseball games at Fenway Park. During the seventh inning stretch, as well as playing take me out to the ball game, they played God Bless America in honour of those who died in the September 11th attacks.

12th September 2012 - The official report into the Hillsborough football stadium disaster was released.
