September 12th, 1940. Lascaux cave paintings discovered near Montignac, France by 4 teenagers after following their dog into into the narrow entrance of a cavern.

September 13th, 1814; Francis Scott Key penned a poem which was later set to music and became the Star Spangled Banner, National Anthem of The United States.
The original title of the poem was " The Defence of Fort McHenry".

"Reaching" the moon in this context being a more than generous term. Not exactly a precision landing. It was nothing more than a projectile that crashed into the moon.

Still, at least they didn't miss.
