October 8th, 1871 the Chicago fire starts. It started in the barn of Patrick and Catherine O'Leary, starting a two day blaze that killed 200-300 people, destroyed 17,450 buildings and cost about $200,000,000 in1871 dollars.

On the 13th of October 1972, Urugayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed high up in the Andes. 16 survived. It took 72 days before they were rescued. 2 passengers trekked downhill to raise the alarm. It's quite a story of survival. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1972_Andes_flight_disaster

I read his book The Right Stuff, it's a fantastic read about a real hero/pioneer.

Chuck Yeager wrote several autobiographical books about his life and career, but not that one. The Right Stuff was written by Tom Wolfe.
BTW, if you play close attention to the movie based on the book, Chuck Yeager has a cameo appearance as an old bartender at the Happy Bottom Riding Club, a bar just outside what became known as Edwards Air Force Base.

You are of course right......It's been a long time since I read that book, back in the early 80's. I didn't know about him playing the bartender, I have the DVD so I'll have to revisit it!
